Potter, James T. / WHS / Robertstock, Forward Statue. The bronze statue Forward stood on the North Hamilton walkway to the State Capitol when this picture was taken. The statue symbolizes the spirit of Wisconsin and was given the state motto for its name. In 1995 the statue was removed because of deterioration, conserved and put on permanent display in the lobby of the State Historical Society headquarters located at the University of Wisconsin - Madison campus at 816 State Street. A memorial to Wisconsin police officers who died in the line of duty took its place in 1998 on the corner of S. Pinckney and E. Mifflin. In August 1996, on the seventy-sixth anniversary of the womens suffrage movement, a smaller bronze replica of Forward was installed on the State Street steps. The money to produce the bronze replica was raised by the Friends of Forward Committee. Originally published in a Wisconsin State Journal column entitled Have You Seen This Madison?. The column ran from 1969 to 1977.
